DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we approach mid  term our community has been involved in a number of events. Some include preparing for ILP meetings, camps and excursions or La Grande Fête, and learning teaching assessments.  Our kindergarten students have completed follow up BASE testing and many year 10 students have selected their subject choices for year 11.  If your child is moving to year 7 or year 11, their transition will also be a focus for teachers, parents, and students.

Preparations for La Grande Fête on Saturday 5th November have been in full swing, and we appreciate the time and effort that this has taken. After two years I am really looking forward to its comeback and thank you and the P & C for their tireless work.

Throughout term 4, the Telopea staff continue to build their skills to enhance student learning outcomes. Many staff have attended Professional Learning during the year and at least three attended conferences during the term three holidays. Great learning and teaching occur during formal instruction as well as via camps and excursions. Both primary and secondary school staff have ensured rich opportunities are available to students and form an important part of their inquiry learning. Our Colour fun run is another great example of what we can do together to achieve amazing results along with building our community spirit. Thank you to all staff of their ongoing commitment to our students. Parents for their generous contributions and to our students who participate so enthusiastically.

Congratulations to Mhairi Henderson, who was recognised by the Teacher Quality Institute as being a Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher. Mhairi completed this rigorous process some time ago and was officially recognised at a recent ceremony. Well done, Mhairi, you have reason to be proud of your achievements (and we’re proud of you too).

We will soon be developing our new strategic plan based on our recent review. There were several commendations and affirmations along with four recommendations. The report is still in draft form and will be made available to the community once it is finalised. There is much to celebrate here at Telopea Park School and together we will continue to focus on improvement.  As a whole school we will get together to align our priorities and develop school improvement targets. I would like to thank Di Pekin, Wayne Prowse, Chris Jones, and Gai Beecher who led the review. Their availability and work with all our stakeholders are much appreciated.

PRIMARY NEWS

The last two weeks have been busy.

Kindergarten students have completed their second BASE assessment and results will be shared with parents as soon as they become available.

On Tuesday of week 3, the year 3 students went on a successful excursion to Tidbinbilla, where they participated in activities run by the Rangers and also had time to explore the park. Students and teachers commented on what a worthwhile experience it was.

Parent Engagement Session:

Last Wednesday parents from K-6 attended the session facilitated by Edwina Tierney and Anna McGown. The session focused on understanding anxiety and helpful/unhelpful ways of responding to it.  The discussion was rich and demonstrated the power of sharing our lived experiences.

The year 2 students have also started a yoga program!

Samuel Paty Poesie

De bien beaux textes! Très émouvant

On Monday 31 October, during the Monday Announcements (online due to rainy weather), Y5-CM2 students offered us a beautiful reading of poems. The poems were written as a tribute to Samuel Paty, a French teacher of History-Geography, who passed away in October 2020. The texts (that you can read thanks to the link below) are about freedom, and especially freedom of speech, respect, and brotherhood, values promoted in every school all around the world.

Thank you to all Y5-CM2 students for their input and thank you to the teachers Christine Rufflet and Sarah Moncuquet for the coordination and the creation of the book.

SECONDARY NEWS - PE

Wow, what a year it has been in PE, Health & Sport. We would like to welcome back Mr Scott Sherwin who has returned from his Long Service Leave, and thank Mrs Sally-Lee Hill, Mrs Teagan Ashworth and Mrs Kar O’Rourke who all taught Physical and Health education in term 3.

The following is a wrap up of all things PE, Semester 2, sport from mid term 2, and a few gentle reminders as the weather warms.

Physical and Health Education

All students had settled well into their new PE classes for the semester. This semester, most mainstream classes commenced with their Dance or Health units, then switched to complete the other unit whilst the weather was cooler. All students were actively engaged in their dance classes – and from all reports, really enjoyed being able to partner dance again – Barn Dance, Pride of Erin, Heel and Toe Polka, Canadian 3-step, Cha Cha and Mambo were some of the dances they learnt and enjoyed – as well as the Cha Cha Slide, Boot Scootin Boogie, Love a rainy night, High School Hop, Ghostbusters and many more. We were amazed by their commitment, skills and performances. Health units for semester two were Relationships and Sexuality (year 7), Alcohol, Drugs and Smoking (year 8) and Mental Health (years 9 & 10). Unfortunately, as you all know, our semester 2 units have struggled to maintain consistency with the constant rain – our oval is thick and soggy, but we are remaining physically active where possible, and being very creative with our activities. We commend the students on their flexibility and enthusiasm in their participation.

In Semester 1, 2023 we will re-offer the Year 9 & 10 Outdoor Education with Ms Ibbotson. This course will provide students with a variety of practical and theory work across a range of activities such as orienteering, mountain biking, bushwalking and hiking, local indigenous history and culture, climbing (indoor and outdoor rock climbing) and camping. Students will have the opportunity to attend a range of excursions and a 3-day camp to practice the skills they have learned during the semester. It will be available on Line 6, which means the EFS students will also be able to select it. Please encourage your student to speak with Ms Ibbotson if they have any questions about this course.

Elective Classes

Fitness for Boys

The boys have been working this term on their peer fitness lessons – developing a session plan to teach and engage their classmates, with a focus on fun and fitness. Our gym sessions at Club Lime have been valuable and the boys are making some good improvements in both their strength and fitness.

Mr Richardson

Fitness for Life

Fitness for Life students are currently in the middle of implementing their own fitness program and working toward their SMART goal. Students are attending the gym once a week and completing a school based fitness session for one more week. I have been very impressed with many of the programs so far.

Mrs Rayner.

Year 10 Outdoor Education

It was very exciting to get back into some normalcy within the Year 10 Outdoor Education elective and the associated preparedness for the upcoming Coast Camp after a very disrupted couple of years. So far, the group has completed a unit of work on Initiative and Team Building Games, which required them to design and develop, in small teams, an activity to teach to their peers. As a result, there was some significant ingenuity and creative activities delivered. The end of Term 3 saw the first of many pool snorkelling sessions in preparation for the Australian Underwater Federation Pool Snorkel Award. These sessions were conducted at Queanbeyan Pool, whilst waiting for the opening of Manuka Pool. The class has been busily practising their snorkelling skills and working on their water fitness in preparation for our Coast Camp. This practical work has been combined with a classroom lesson each week, with a focus on the theoretical aspects of snorkelling, rips, currents, ocean awareness and basic first aid.

The Coast Camp will primarily include a selection of activities from snorkelling, surfing, swimming, fishing, beach games and night activities, with various locations used dependant on weather and swell conditions. The Coast Camp is being held from Wednesday 9 – Friday 11 November. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to consolidate their learning from their lessons in a supportive and encouraging environment. The attending staff are looking forward to the opportunity to work with the class.

The remaining weeks of Term 4 will involve students completing a reflection of the Coast Camp and a clean-up of the camping equipment. The last two weeks will be spent completing a unit of work on Archery at Montgomery Oval.

Lastly, I would like to thank Megan Taylor for taking the Outdoor Education class during Term 3 whilst I was on leave.

Scott Sherwin

STRIVE

STRIVE students have had a productive semester thus far. Excursions have had an emphasis in building skills in teamwork and included Dragon Boating on Lake Burley Griffin and an Escape Room. Students have recently taken time out of their busy schedules to complete their Service Projects. Some projects included refereeing, tutoring, community clean up and raising money for causes including the RSPCA.

Mr McAuliffe

Women in Sport

Women in Sport students have worked on the development of individual and team skills in both indoor and outdoor activities, with emphasis on game sense, teamwork, and social interaction. This semester the physical focus was on racquet sports and field activities, which provided students with the opportunity to explore areas of interest and develop a range of skills. The health focus was the Certification in First Aid, with The Royal Life Saving Association and Mental Health, Mental Conditions and Body Image.

Mrs Moro and Mrs Currie

Sports Leadership

This term we have started putting our coaching theory into practice. On Thursday afternoon’s we have been coaching our Primary School Kindergarten and Year 1 groups. This has provided the students with a very challenging, but also very rewarding experience. We are going to be helping out with our Primary & Secondary Colour Run in Week 4 and in theory lessons we are completing an online Inclusive Coaching Course.

Mr Foxhill

Finally, if you have any questions about your child’s participation and progress in PE and Health or Sport, please feel free to contact myself or your child’s PE teacher.

Regards

Megan Taylor
