REPORT FROM THE PROVISEURE

🏀🌏 Phnom Penh 2025 – So Proud of Our Teams! 🌏🏀

We’ve just returned from an unforgettable 5-day trip to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, where 20 of our students took part in the AEFE Asia-Pacific inter-school basketball tournament. Teams travelled from Bangkok, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shanghai, New Delhi, Tokyo — and of course, Phnom Penh — to take part.

After a long journey and three days of intense competition, we couldn’t be prouder of our students:

🥇 College Girls – 1st Place
🏅 College Boys – 4th Place
🏀 High School Boys – 6th Place

More than the results, it was the friendships formed and the cultural exchange with students from across the region that stood out. Our students embraced the opportunity to experience Cambodian culture — and above all, they showed respect, enthusiasm and outstanding behaviour throughout.

They arrived home this morning and are now enjoying a well-earned rest.

A huge congratulations to everyone involved — we are incredibly proud of you!

MESSAGE FROM FRENCH EMBASSY

Once again this year, French gastronomy is joining the celebration — and it won’t go unnoticed! From 17 June to 2 July, the So France So Good campaign returns to Australia to celebrate everything that makes our cuisine and food so special: French savoir-faire, culinary creativity, expertise… and that little touch of “je ne sais quoi” that makes all the difference.

Our goal is simple: to bring together everyone who plays a part in celebrating French gastronomy in Australia — whether you're a chef, a restaurateur, an importer, or just someone who loves good food. Once again this year, we’re counting on you to help grow the momentum. We're keeping things straightforward and expanding our shared network!

Many chefs — whether French, Australian, or from further afield — have already shared their excitement, which is both heartening and appetite-inducing! This year, we’re aiming to make the campaign a real highlight — festive, inclusive, and a true celebration of the richness and diversity of French gastronomy. It’s also a great chance to bring passionate people together and spark new connections.

The 2025 campaign includes the launch of a dedicated website — www.sofrance-sogood.com — featuring a dynamic (and hopefully comprehensive) directory of participants and events. The campaign will be bookended by a launch event in Melbourne and a closing night in Canberra, with videos and recipes shared along the way to keep the momentum going.

So, what can you do?

Directory of Participants

We’ve started putting together a list of contributors from across the country, but we’d really value your help to round it out. If you know someone who might like to be part of the adventure, you’ve got two easy options:

  • Send an email to evenement.canberra-amba@diplomatie.gouv.fr, including their email address and phone number (if available) — we’ll be in touch with them directly, or
  • Share the website and registration page with them and encourage them to sign up: www.sofrance-sogood.com

The website will stay live after the campaign, so we can continue to grow this vibrant community of people involved in French gastronomy.
Let’s keep building this collective network together!

Events

If you’re planning anything related to French gastronomy — dinners, tastings, workshops, classes, meet-ups — we’d love to hear about it so we can include it as part of the So France – So Good campaign.

Many of you already host these kinds of events throughout the year, so why not boost their visibility by tying them into the campaign?

And if you come across any events that would be a great fit, feel free to share them with us at: evenement.canberra-amba@diplomatie.gouv.fr

Social Media

We encourage you to share our upcoming posts about the campaign and help spread the word by promoting any So France – So Good-branded events you’re involved in. The more visibility we create together, the stronger the impact.

To make things easy, we’ve put together a communications kit, which includes:

  • An overview of the So France – So Good campaign
  • Ideas for activities and ways to get involved
  • A logo and banner to use (available here)

If you have any questions, suggestions, or just feel like having a chat, don’t hesitate to reach out to Emilie Piguet at emilie.piguet@diplomatie.gouv.fr .

Let’s get this campaign simmering together — and as always, it’s even better when shared.

Thank you!

NOTE DE LA PROVISEURE

🏀🌏 Phnom Penh 2025 – fiers de nos équipes ! 🌏🏀

  • Récapitulatif de la campagne So France – So Good

Merci

PRIMARY NEWS

Dear Telopea Park School / Lycée Franco-Australien de Canberra community,

As the year rolls on, learning is in full swing here at Telopea Park School.
Across all areas — from speaking and reading, to PE and science — our students are giving their best as they build new knowledge and skills. To support them, our teachers continue to vary their approaches, often using project-based learning or one-off activities that bring lessons to life.

Earlier this year, we told you about the AEFE public speaking competition, Ambassadeurs Ambassadrices en Herbe. A group of Telopea students travelled to Kuala Lumpur in March to represent our school, and we’re proud to share they placed third in the team competition — just behind the French international schools in Beijing and Shanghai. Congratulations to our team, and well done to all who got involved in this exciting challenge!

This week (Week 5 of Term 2), we’re gearing up for another competition — Lève ta voix!
This event is run by the Australian Association of French-English Bilingual Schools (AAFEBS), of which our school is an active member. After classroom practice and in-school finals, the AAFEBS finals will take place online on Thursday 29 May. We’re wishing the best of luck to all our students competing — they’re already doing us proud by representing our school so well.

In this competition, students read a text aloud to an audience and a panel of judges, who will select winners in four categories:

  • Year 1 (CP)
  • Years 2 & 3 (CE1/CE2)
  • Years 4, 5, and 6 (CM1/CM2/6e)
  • French as a Second Language (FLSco, primary)

Representing Telopea Park School – Lycée Franco-Australien de Canberra this year are:
  • Victor Hébrail-Muet – CP
  • Raphaël Morilhat – CE1/CE2
  • Lily-Rose Imbert – CM1/CM2/6e
  • Anna Field – FLSco

In another exciting project, our four Year 6 (CM2) classes are participating in the AEFE’s Sciences en Action program. This initiative invites students to engage with real-world issues around sustainable development by working on innovative science projects. The aim is to spark interest in science and sustainability, while helping students develop teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills.

From an academic perspective, it’s also a great way to practise the scientific method — students put on their lab coats and work through the five key steps:
problem → hypothesis → plan → experiment → conclusion and sharing results

Meanwhile, our younger students — including the Kindergarten (Grande Section) classes, CE1-1, and again the four Year 6 groups — are getting involved in a new initiative created by our own team here at Telopea Park School /  Lycée Franco-Australien de Canberra:

Rideau Rouge

This project invites students to create and perform an original puppet show. They'll not only write the story — developing the plot, characters, and dialogue — but also craft the puppets and learn the unique features of this timeless style of storytelling.
Once the shows are complete, they'll be recorded and sent to a judging panel to choose the winners. We’ll find out the results in Term 4!

Outside the classroom, learning continues in other ways — through lunchtime clubs!
Alongside existing favourites like the Lego Robotics Club and the Arts Club, we’re excited to introduce a new addition: the Journalism Club.
Students meet during lunch to plan and create stories covering what’s happening around school. On 1 April, our budding reporters covered the Telopea Park School Cross Country event at Stromlo, and they’re now working on a video report to share with classes soon. The team is also getting ready to report on the Athletics Carnival, coming up on Tuesday 17 June at Woden.

To help keep all this great learning running smoothly, a couple of important reminders:

  • Class starts at 9:00 am sharp. Students line up at this time, and teachers collect their class to begin the day. Learning begins right away with daily routines like greetings, the date, weather discussions, news-sharing, show-and-tell, and poetry recitations. Arriving late can disrupt both the student’s day and the class as a whole — especially when several students arrive at different times.

  • Kindergarten gates and play areas are for our youngest students only. Please use the correct pick-up and drop-off points:

    • Kindergarten gate (NSW Crescent & Macquarie St) – for Kindergarten students only

    • Main gate (NSW Crescent & Young St) – for Years 1 to 6

    • Small gate (approx. 20 metres south) – for our youngest students in Years 1–2

Thank you all for your continued support and understanding — and thank you for reading!

See you soon!

  • CP ;
  • CE1/CE2 ;
  • CM1/CM2/6e ;
  • FLSco primaire.

A bientôt !

HUMANITIES FACULTY

Individuals and Society

Individuals and Society have had a busy start to the year with lots of exciting events taking place, to keep our students engaged.

We have also welcomed a new Head of Individuals and Society; Ms Alex Dashwood.

Competitions

The National History Challenge is open to all students. The theme this year is ‘Conflict and Resolution’. Students can create a project (essay, multimedia, art etc.) on any time period or event that shows their understanding of history. Students are encouraged to tailor their response to one of the special categories which include Democracy Matters, Australian Women’s History, History of Sport, Asia and Australia and First Nations People. Entries close August 22nd. Students are encouraged to speak to their History or Geography teacher if they are interested as the school has to submit entries on their behalf. Students can win cash prizes.

The Simpson Prize is open to all years 9 & 10 students. Students write an essay response to the question: ‘Evaluate the usefulness of diary entries, letters, and photographs for providing evidence about the contrasting experiences and perspectives of Australians who served in either the First World War or the Second World War’. Students must write the essay about either World War One or World War Two and use the sources provided by the Australian War Memorial as well as conducting their own research. Entries close November 5th. Students are encouraged to speak to their History or Geography teacher if they are interested as the school has to submit entries on their behalf. Students can win a three day tour around the national institutions in Canberra as well as a trip to an overseas ANZAC Day Ceremony.

Last year Aishwarya Karthik, one of our school captains, entered both competitions. She won the Year Ten award and the Democracy Matters special category for the National History Challenge. She also was runner-up in The Simpson Prize and took part in the three day tour around a number of institutions including the Australian War Memorial and the Australian Electoral Commission.

Upcoming Events: Australian Business Week

Year 10 students will be participating in Australian Business Week (ABW) in Week 10 this term. Information regarding this program would have been sent home with your student. Students will be placed into teams of about 10 and assume management roles to run a virtual hospitality company, making important decisions as they compete against other participating teams from within Telopea Park School.

A successful hotel must stand out in a highly competitive marketplace, attract business, maintain high standards and ensure that revenue exceeds the cost of making rooms available. That quality of the environment, customer service, marketing and profit margins are all major factors that the students need to master. Students enjoy this opportunity to develop work related skills and personal development skills.

To make this an even more exciting week for students, we will be giving out prizes and awards across a number of categories. We are seeking donations of prizes from local businesses, companies and supporters so if you are in a capacity to donate something, please get in touch with Megan Evans (megan.evans@ed.act.edu.au).

COMMUNITY NEWS

Seeking Your Voice: Help Us Strengthen the IB Middle Years Programme

At our school, we are proud to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) – a framework that encourages students to think critically, make connections across subjects, and grow as active, lifelong learners. As part of our ongoing commitment to improvement, we are currently undertaking our official MYP programme evaluation.

What is programme evaluation?

Programme evaluation is a regular and essential part of the IB’s global quality assurance process. It allows us to reflect on how we are implementing the MYP, celebrate our successes, and identify areas for growth. Importantly, it is not about assessing individual students or teachers, but rather about strengthening the programme as a whole to ensure it continues to meet the needs of our students and aligns with the high standards of the IB.

Why your feedback matters

A key part of this process involves gathering input from our community – and that includes you, our parents and caregivers. Your perspective is vital. You see how the MYP impacts your child’s learning, development, and engagement. Your feedback will help us understand what’s working well and where we can improve.

How you can contribute

We’ve prepared a short survey designed to capture your experiences and impressions of the MYP at our school. It should only take a few minutes to complete, and your responses will remain confidential. The insights you share will directly inform our evaluation report and future planning.

The Survey will be open until 10:00am on 27 June 2025.

Thank you in advance for your support and for being a key part of our learning community. Together, we can continue to shape an MYP experience that inspires, challenges, and empowers our students.

Cymantha Cantrill

Deputy Principal 7-10 and MYP Coordinator
