Telopea Topics No12 2024
REPORT FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Hello parents, carers, students and community members,
This Telopea Topics article comes from the Deputy Principal 7-10, who usually would be Sam Cantrill. However, while Sam is off on leave for weeks 1-4 you have me (Stacey Griffiths) filling in to keep the ball rolling on the amazing work that has been happening around the school during the end of Semester 1 and the start of this semester.
In particular, we have had a wide range of school based and off-site activities and excursions that have been enriching our student’s learning and have contributed to our Strategic Plan priority of building connections. A massive shout out to our dedicated staff who put in a huge amount of work behind the scenes to make these events happen. Just a few have included the Ski Trips, NAIDOC week activities (including the famous native meat sausage sizzle), the Astrolabe Project commenced, and the ICAS competitions are still occurring.
It is always amazing to see how many students sign up for the opportunities, such as the events above, that are available to them, and I am consistently proud to be a member of the Telopea Park School community every time I see a young person represent our school. Another thing I love is when we get to share and celebrate the achievements of our students at extracurricular activities such as external sporting competitions. For example, a little birdy has told me that our Year 9 student, Eknoor, has been recently selected for the U15 Boys Cricket State Team to represent the ACT at the Australian Championships. Congratulations to Eknoor and to our other young people that are competing in sporting events, volunteering or contributing to the community in other ways. We are proud of you as a school community! If your young person has an amazing achievement, we would love to hear about it. You can let your child’s CG (or primary classroom) teacher know and we can share with them in celebrating their achievements.
Our PBL Team has worked hard this term to revamp and update the PBL tokens, hopefully your child is talking with you at home about how their positive behaviours are being recognised by their teachers and peers. The house with the highest number of tokens at the end of the term will be recognised not only at an assembly, but also with a BBQ to connect with their house members (as PBL is about recognising positive behaviours across the school).
We welcome Sam back in Week 5 when I will move across to cover for Peter Clayden (Deputy K-10). I look forward to working with our families again as the SLC Student Welfare from week 8 onwards.
Dr Stacey Griffiths
a/g Deputy Principal 7-10 (but then also K-10 for a bit 😊 )
Dr Stacey Griffiths

PRIMARY NEWS
Telopea Park School / Lycée franco-australien de Canberra for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games
Every 4 years, we feel the same frenzy and the same passion. The spotlight is on sports, and the universal values of sharing, fraternity, communion and, of course, excelling oneself, as the Olympic motto indicates: Citius, altius, fortius (Faster, higher, stronger). This year, Paris was the capital of the Games, and the city welcomed athletes and supporters from all over the world. Here, from down under, it was the first Olympic Games in the southern hemisphere for many pupils and their families, and for many adults at the school. And it was fantastic to follow these Games in Canberra and to see the same enthusiasm in Australia, France and most countries around the world!
At Telopea Park School / Lycée franco-australien de Canberra, the Olympic festivities began at the end of term 1 with the K and Year 1 Olympic Games, during the primary athletics carnival. And on July 5th, Year 7 EFS students presented their show Plus vite, plus haut, plus fort (Faster, higher, stronger), which showed sport and performance in an offbeat and very funny way, with singing and dancing interludes performed by primary pupils. Back in March, Year 5 and Year 6 students wrote a newspaper about the Olympic and Paralympic Games called Boomerang and Le Monde des Jeux, presenting certain sports, female and male athletes, and also some of the special features of the Paralympic world.
Among the interludes, Year 2.2 students once again performed their Dance of the Games (Danse des Jeux ), and here are is everything you need to know:
The Dance of the Games has been launched by the organisers of Paris 2024. The idea is to get a large number of schools, including those within the AEFE network, to dance at the same time. Students from Telopea Park School/lycée franco-australien de Canberra danced at the same time as other students from schools in the Asia-Pacific region.
This dance aims to strengthen the links between sport, art and the Olympic and Paralympic values of solidarity, sharing and inclusion. Mourad Merzouki, its choreographer, explained that the Dance of the Games was designed to be shared by everyone, whatever their age or physical condition.
The dance is made up of 3 parts: first, students dance (chorus), second, they all use movements and gestures to represent the values of respect and cooperation (a hug for everyone, giving, kissing and sharing with everyone throughout the world), and third, certain sports are mimed: boxing, archery, football, weightlifting and basketball.
Both students and teachers were thrilled to take part.
At the start of Semester 2, after the break, all teachers were keen to make the Games a special moment by offering specific teaching activities or simply by opening the classroom during lunchtime to watch competitions, for instance surfing and the impressive waves at Teahupo'o on the beautiful island of Tahiti.
Green and gold, and blue, white, and red, and all the colours of the world!
Also as part of the Olympic Games, Friday, August 2nd was Green and Gold Day. Students dressed up in the colours of their country. Many countries were represented, including but not limited to Australia and France. What a wonderful celebration for our multicultural school!
Australia, Belgium, Spain, France, Uruguay, and so many other countries were represented!
Congratulations to Paris and Paris 2024 for these wonderful Games, and see you in four years' time in Los Angeles and in 2032 in Brisbane!
A few reminders
School hours
Classes start at 9am and finish at 3.15pm, Monday to Friday. The teachers supervising the gates are instructed to close at 9am sharp and pupils are asked to be in line by then. Please ensure to arrive before 9am.
In all classes, and especially in Kindergarten (Grande Section de maternelle), teachers start the class with ritual activities, an important part of learning. It is therefore essential that pupils are able to attend and participate in these activities. When children are late, they are not in the right frame of mind to learn or cannot access certain skills and knowledge.
At the end of the day, class ends at 3.15pm. The gates are open until 3.30pm. For safety reasons, and because teachers regularly have meetings after 3.30pm, parents are asked to leave the school grounds at 3.30pm. Finally, as this is not playtime, the play areas and sandboxes are not open to students. Thank you for your understanding.
Semester 2 overviews
Semester 2 overviews were posted in week 3. For new families, please make sure that the teachers have sent you an invitation on ClassDojo or on their usual communication platform.
All the best and happy semester 2!

SECONDARY STUDENT SERVICES
Hello from the Student Services team (7-10),
It has been a jam-packed start to the semester, and it has been great to see our students return from the school holidays rested and ready to learn.
At this point our teaching and learning is in full swing, with class changed sorted and students settled into a good routine.
At this point in the term, we wanted to let you know about some staffing changes we have in the Student Services (which students call A3) space. In particular, we have welcomed Andrew Nolan into the SLC Student Welfare role (as Stacey is acting in another position). Andrew comes to us from Victoria and whilst he is relatively new to TLPS, he is an experienced educator who brings a passion for student welfare and improved outcomes to the role. Andrew will be in this position until week 8 this term and can be reached on andrew.nolan@ed.act.edu.au or on 6423379 or 61423385.
We also welcome Elsa Deane in the Student Learning role for the term while Ebony Moro is on leave. Elsa will be a familiar face to many as she comes to us from the primary school, which will also mean that she has a strong understanding of our school context.
Hayley Mossop has returned to us but in a shifted role. While she was once our Student Services Support Officer, she has stepped into the Youth Worker role (alongside Steve). The students and staff are so excited that Hayley remains part of the A3 team, but in a more student-centred role. Parents and carers will be able to contact Lucy in the Student Services Support Officer role. Lucy will also be working with Krystal to coordinate our upcoming Parent-Teacher night. If you have not already received an email with the Save The Date, please contact our welfare admin to check your details on our system (or check your details on the Sentral Parent Portal). The PT night will be held in week 9 on Monday and Tuesday from 3.30 – 6pm.
We also wanted to send a HUGE thank you to our parents and carers that have supported our students in following our school expectations. In particular, a shout out to the parents of students that are in uniform, at school on time and ready to learn. We appreciate how much work happens behind the scenes at home for this to happen. We also recognise that sometimes things go awry, and if your family is struggling please do not hesitate to reach out to Student Services for support. You can contact our SLCs or your child’s Year Coordinator on the emails below. We have a range of services and supports we can put in place for your child/ren, and can have a confidential conversation any time.

SKI TEAM RESULTS
Congratulations to everyone who represented Telopea at the ACT and NSW interschools ski competition last week at Perisher. A number of students participated for the first time, and everyone did the school proud. One team and two individuals have qualified for nationals in the Alpine and Ski Cross disciplines, in Divisions 3 and 6. Well done to Dash Mackay, Herbert Hilton-Thorp and Sophie Brennan.

2024 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey
Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in Years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2024 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey will be available online from 16 August to 6 September. The survey results will help us to continue to make quality informed decisions about how to improve our school. No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.
For each child in their family who attends an ACT public school, parents and carers will receive:
- A letter about the student survey outlining the reasons for collection and privacy provision for the data; and
- An email about the parent survey, including a unique link to access the survey. Genuine survey invitation emails will have the title "The 2024 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey is now open!" and will be sent from EDU Surveys & Evaluation with 'from' address EDUSurveys@act.gov.au.
If you do not receive the survey invitation, please check your Junk email folder; if it is not there, please contact your school. If you do not have an email listed with the school, please contact the front office on 61423388 or on telopea.enquiry@ed.act.edu.au
The Parents and Carers Survey will be available online in other languages: Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Spanish, Telugu, French and Italian. Respondents can select their preferred language when they start the survey. A shortened paper-version of the Parents and Carers Survey is also available in the following 5 languages: Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Karen and Mon. These surveys could be made available with prior notification at the Front Office.
For the results to reflect the opinions of our whole school community, we need as many parents and carers, staff and students as possible to complete the survey. Your feedback is important, and we hope you will take part.
