Telopea Topics No. 12
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT
We have had another busy term across the school which has seen amazing work from, activities and opportunities for our students. The start of the term, with a large number of NAIDOC week celebrations was enjoyed by many of our staff and students. We hope that in the future as restrictions continue to lift that we can see parents joining us to celebrate at these types of events as well.
Congratulations to our many successful sporting teams that have gone out, with many coming back with awards and top positions in their chosen fields. We love that our students have a rich and diverse range of interests and that they continue to shine not only in their academics, but also in their sporting, volunteering and other extracurricular activities. If your child is participating in something outside of school, we would love to hear about it and celebrate it in our community. Please reach out to your child’s teacher/s or Year Coordinator if there is something we can share and recognise in our community.
On reaching out, you would have hopefully seen the information sent out last Telopea Topics by Jason around our new parent feedback portal. We want to hear what is happening, whether it is positive, an area we need to improve or even just general feedback and ideas we can consider. Please note that the QR code that went out was correct, but the actual link in the image is case sensitive and may not have worked for everyone. The correct link is https://forms.office.com/r/ZXsVCsx91K
You should be seeing the QR codes and links appearing around the school as well. We encourage parents to use this to provide feedback or report any issues as soon as possible. The leadership team meets regularly and tracks the progress of reports so that we can address the issues as they arise, or move feedback onto the appropriate person.
We have been developing a culture of reporting and providing feedback with our students for a long time. Students can give feedback to their SRC members to raise at SRC meetings which are brought to leadership and board meetings. Students also have access to their own feedback form which is actively used by a number of students to raise issues they see around the school that they would like addressed. If your child is wanting to provide feedback or report an issue, they can use the link on their chromebook (it opens every time they open Google Chrome) or they can go to https://forms.office.com/r/meHrPnxpa9 . Please note that they need to be logged into their school account to use this form.
High students who are needing support in any way also have access to our Student Services request forms. They can complete this form in hard copy at A3, or online at https://forms.office.com/r/TPLg9cU761 . Students also need to be logged in to access this form. Primary students can reach out for support through their teacher or through email (from the parents) to anna.mcgown@ed.act.edu.au .
This term we will also be holding our Parent (and Carer) – Teacher interviews in Week 9. We have listened to the feedback from our school community and will be trialling a new online booking system which is in use around a number of schools in the ACT already. You will receive information about this in the coming weeks prior to the bookings opening. We also welcome Hayley M into a new role of the PT Interview Coordinator. In this role she will be a single point of contact for all parents and carers who have questions or are looking for information about these interviews. You will receive communications from her with the new contact details for PT Interviews. If you have any questions or feedback, please reach out to her through these channels.

NOUVELLES DU PRIMAIRE
Coopération, Honnêteté, Equité, Respect
CHERs parents,

PRIMARY NEWS
Cooperation, Honesty, Equity, Respect
CHERs parents,
CHERe Telopea Park School community,
I am very honoured to write to you today for the first time in Telopea Topics.
I have chosen to highlight those four letters C H E R to start my presentation as they stand for the great values promoted at Telopea Park School - Lycée Franco-Australien de Canberra. I do not know if that was made on purpose but, as most of you probably know, cher is the French for dear. Dear all, then…
Cooperation, Honesty, Equity, Respect. Those four great human values refer to my own perception of what education is: not only a transmission of knowledge but a transmission of values, specific abilities, social skills, cultural features, and much more, that ignite and support the personality of our students, future citizens of the world.
I started my career as a Primary School teacher in my hometown, Toulon, located in the South of France, on the Mediterranean Sea. There, I could discover the specificities of the job for about 10 years. I learnt a lot and it was an excellent training period before applying for schools abroad and discovering new environments and new features of schools. I worked then at le Lycée Français de Los Angeles for 6 years, and, aside from teaching, I had the opportunity to develop skills in pedagogical coordination. Last year, I had the chance to work in Tangier, Morocco, and I was in charge of inclusion and special needs students, from Preschool to Year 12.
Europe, America, Africa… and now Oceania with your country which I already know is breathtaking. And I cannot wait to discover, at least, parts of it. I also look forward to discovering Australia not only geographically, but also humanly, professionally.
Meanwhile, I thank you all for your warm welcome and the whole Primary School wishes the best for the rest of the year to our students. May they be assured of our full support, kindness, and professionalism on their way to success.

Student Services Report
Welcome to Semester 2 from the Student Services Team. We provide a wide range of support for students and their families. Our team includes a School Psychologist, Youth Health Nurse, Student Support Officer, Learning Support Assistants, Year Coordinators and Executive Teachers for Student Welfare, Student Engagement and Student Learning. Year Coordinators include Sheree Avard (Year 10), Cade Williams (Year 9), Annemarie Power (Year 8), Michael Thomas (Year 7) and Susan Blythe-Jones (Year 6 Transition). Students are encouraged to attend Student Services at any time and can refer themselves for targeted assistance in person or via the Student Services website.
Communication between parents/carers, students and school is extremely important to the success of each student. Please inform Student Services of any change in contact details such as phone numbers, home, and email addresses as soon as possible.
Telopea Park School prioritises attendance as crucial for students to achieve to their potential and maintain connectivity to the school. Absences are reported on each student’s record as a legal requirement and is marked each school session including every class, Contact Group, Assembly and Personal and Social Sessions. School hours are 8.50am – 3.15pm, Monday – Friday. Students arriving late to school are expected to sign in at Student Services and explanation is due within 5 days of the absence. The most effective way of communicating with the school is via email: student.welfare@telopea.act.edu.au or phone: 6142 3385 (with a subsequent letter or email). Parents/carers will receive Attendance Advice Letters after 7 unexplained absences. Please, also, note that students are not to attend school before 8.20am each day, as supervision is not available before that time. Students requiring leaving the school, for any reason, during the day must provide a permission note from a parent/carer, collect a Leave Pass at Student Services and wait at the Front Office at the requested leaving time. It would be greatly appreciated if students could gain their Leave Pass as early as possible in the day and are punctual when waiting for their parents/carers.
Students who become unwell during the school day should first get a note from their classroom teacher and then attend First Aid in the Secondary Library. First Aid staff will contact parents/carers, facilitate students going home and amend attendance records as required.
Please feel welcome to communicate any information or concerns to Student Services so we can best assist your child in achieving to their potential.
Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) Update
The PBL Team consisting of staff from both primary and secondary have been in consultation with teachers and students around expected behaviours in all of our non-classroom settings. The team is now working on a draft of our first PBL Matrix of Expected Non-Classroom Behaviours, which will be shared with all members of the school community for feedback towards the end of this term.
Once this consultation period is complete, we will begin to introduce the expected behaviours to students. This will involve explicit, age appropriate teaching, regular reinforcement and recognition of positive behaviours.
Keep an eye out in coming weeks for your chance to provide feedback and suggestions.

INFORMATION for FAMILIES
A message from the ACT Education Directorate: Keeping our students learning in Term 3
Every ACT public school is working hard to manage the impacts of COVID-19 and the flu in our schools to ensure minimal disruption for everyone and keep students learning.
Face-to-face learning in the classroom remains the core way students are learning this term; however, staff shortages may see them learning a little differently from time to time.
What can parents and students expect?
When schools do not have appropriate staffing levels to support students in their usual classrooms the following measures may be put in place:
- Older students may learn online in a supervised setting.
- Students may be engaged in a modified program of learning in their regular classroom with supervision from school staff.
- Students may participate in self-directed learning (supervised by other classroom teachers this may be via Google Classrooms or a pre-prepared activity).
- Students may be split into classes across the school, where children may engage in self-directed learning and/or the learning of their host class.
- Some activities may be put on hold (eg lunchtime clubs)
Where schools are no longer able to manage using the above strategies students may move to learning from home for short periods of time.
If this is the case your school will work with the Directorate ahead of time to make this decision and families will be provided with learning activities for use during this time.
Sometimes this decision will need to be made quickly. We appreciate that the short notice is difficult for families and, where we can, will ensure we give as much notice as we are able.
Non-essential events and excursions
There may also be the need to postpone/cancel planned activities and events offsite (eg camps, excursions, sporting days etc) from time to time, sometimes at short notice.
We appreciate any cancellation is disappointing and wherever possible schools will reschedule these missed opportunities.
Thank you once more to our parents, carers and staff for their ongoing support and commitment again this term.

P&C NEWS
President update
The P&C met on 3 August and heard from both the principal and Proviseur who outlined all the fabulous initiatives happening around the school. This includes a Parent Community Feedback form, a triage system for dealing with staff shortages and the introduction of a parent communication committee and parent coffee sessions. There will soon be a call for applications for parent representatives to sit on the French statutory committees. Among many other great initiatives, it was also great to meet the new Directeur Française de l'école primaries Patrice Piche. Full reports from both are available.
The P&C general discussion included a president's update, community Q&A, and a majority vote for the passing of the new P&C constitution - which has not been updated in 30 years!!! We also received a great update from our board chair following the week 3 meeting the previous night. There was also an update from our Out of Hours School Care around staff shortages and general running of the business. Finally, there was robust discussion about spending of funds, and the ever-problematic traffic concerns.
Meeting agendas and minutes are available on the P&C website and all parents are members of the P&C and welcome to join us anytime!

Volunteers must:
- Have a current Working with Vulnerable People (WwVP) card.
- Not attend if they have any COVID symptoms. Adhere to current advice: https://www.covid19.act.gov.au/stay-safe-and-healthy/exposed-to-covid19.
- Wear a mask when on site.
- Follow Fire and Lockdown processes should they occur while on site. All visitors will be directed to a specified area by a staff member.
And remember...
- label student items with at least an initial and last name.
- parents/guardians can also search for items in the Lost Property Area (primary courtyard, to the right as you enter the primary gate). The best time is at drop off (8.30-9am) or when picking up children from Outside School Hours Care.
