Telopea Topics No16 2024
PRINCIPAL REPORT
Dear Parents and Carers,
We’ve experienced a terrific start to the term, with students and staff settling back into the routines of daily school life well. To keep you in the loop, on the pupil free day, staff spent time revisiting our School Improvement priorities, actions and progress to date. As a reminder, the three priorities from our School Improvement Plan are:
- Priority 1: To strengthen student connectedness to the school community.
- Priority 2: Improve student growth in Literacy.
- Priority 3: Improve student growth in Numeracy.
Throughout 2024 we’ve focussed more heavily on Priority 1. One of the vehicles we’ve used to drive this has been Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL), promoting greater connectedness through a dedicated focus on recognising and celebrating positive behaviours. We’ve attempted to do this in concert with managing student behaviour effectively to make the school a more enjoyable place to be.
As we looked through the evidence of our work and impact around PBL, we have achieved quite a bit through explicit learning avenues, signage and a greater emphasis on recognising positive behaviours through the PBL Tokens/Bucks. I give my thanks to the PBL team and the staff in general, who have all embraced this. I also give thanks to students, who have equally embraced the PBL Tokens/Bucks concept. In Term 3 alone, over 8000 PBL Tokens/Buck have been earned by students!! That’s an incredible number of positive behaviours 😊. I will also pass my congratulations to Farrer House, who received the most Tokens/Bucks (per person) in the PBL House Challenge.
Road Safety
Before I go, I’ll take one more opportunity to remind parents/carers of the importance of driving and parking safely around the school. We will continue to remind students of the need to be safe when they are transiting around the school, but it is worth us all remembering the need to take additional care when driving/riding around the school.
World Teacher’s Day
Today (25 October) is World Teacher’s Day. It’s a great opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the great work teachers do to support students in their learning and wellbeing, cultivate curiosity, and build relationships that are of benefit to the young people they teach. It is both complex and joyful work, made all the more enjoyable by the support of parents and carers.
This year, the theme of World Teacher’s Day is “Hats off to teachers.” The term ‘hats off’ has a long history of being used to show respect, admiration and offer congratulations. It can be traced back to medieval times when knights would remove their helmets to show respect.
I’ll throw back a “hats off” to our awesome P&C, who, apart from the numerous messages of thanks to Telopea /Lycee franco-australien de Canberra teachers, also provided some delicious coffee and pastries as a way to show their appreciation for the great work our teachers do. Merci beaucoup.
Farewell and Thank You
In wrapping up my article, I share my thanks to the students, staff and parents/carers of Telopea Park School / Lycee franco-australien de Canberra. While shorter than anticipated, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the school, forging some great relationships, watching students and staff grow and ‘shine’, supporting people through challenges, and promoting a strong binational environment that is unique in the world. There have also been great opportunities for my learning as a leader – some complexities, challenges and opportunities that I would never have dreamed of. Thank you one and all - it has been a wonderful school community to be part of and I hope my impact has been positive, setting the school up for its next 100 years of learning.
Regards,
Jason.

NOTE DU PRINCIPAL
Cordialement,
Jason.

LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT
Welcome to Term 4
We have had some staffing changes this semester. Silvana Olsen retired and we have been lucky enough to find Flavio Cappelletti to replace her. Flavio brings with him a wealth of experience in teaching Italian as a second language. In Japanese, Kara O’Rourke left to have her third child, and we have the multi-lingual Karyn Ang filling in until her return mid next year. We also welcomed back Annemarie Power to Spanish after maternity leave. She is working part-time along with Catherine Walker and Cindy Gomez Paez.
The Language Acquisition faculty was proudly social media famous earlier this month. With one of our Mandarin students featured on the ACT Public Schools Facebook page. Ciru finished third at the 2024 Australian final of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students. She acknowledged her success was partly due to the dedication of her Mandarin teacher working with her throughout the stages.
“Ms Guo is amazing. I don’t know where I would’ve been without her. Xiexie, Guo lao shi!”
Mandarin
Mandarin classes finished Term 3 with fun packed activities. Year 10 Mandarin class had an excursion to the Star Buffet for the Chinese Food Appreciation. Students hopped onto the school bus driven by Mr Yuen and visited the Beijing Garden first. After a brief stroll in the Beijing Garden, students had a running dictation game. Every team ran fast trying to complete writing the poem first. After the vigorous running, students had a relaxing TaiChi led by Leon. Everyone had a great time! And finally, students hopped onto the school bus again heading to the Star Buffet, where everyone enjoyed the yummy Chinese food.
Year 7, 8 and 9 classes went to the ACT Chinese Language Network Gala Day, where eight schools from primary, secondary and colleges across ACT showcased their Chinese language skills and cultural performances. Telopea Year 9 boys along with some Year 8 boys started the Gala Day with an amazing dragon dance. Liam and Tashi were part of the MCs, Year 7 class sang a well known Chinese song the Moon Represents My Heart. Krys Cox from Year 8 played a Chinese song on her cello, and a small group of girls presented a traditional Chinese costume Hanfu show. Well done, everyone! After the performances, all the students made a lantern to celebrate the Moon Festival.
Indonesian
On 17 August 2024, Indonesian language students were invited by the Embassy of Indonesia to participate in the Indonesian Independence Day celebration. Since the day fell on a Saturday, a few students made their own arrangements to join the celebration. They had the opportunity to observe the ‘Flag Raising’ ceremony and sampled ‘Nasi Tumpeng’. This dish is only served during special occasions. It is yellow rice shaped into a cone and served with an assortment of dishes. Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
Learning Angklung instrument
In term 3, Indonesian language students had the opportunity to learn how to play ‘Angklung’. Angklung is an Indonesian musical instrument consisting of two to four bamboo tubes suspended in a bamboo frame, bound with rattan cords. This learning was possible as we had Ibu Farah who volunteered to come to our school to spend time with our Indonesian language students.
German
On 16 May, our Year 10 German class had the exciting opportunity to participate in the Day of the German Language at the German Embassy, in collaboration with the Austrian and Swiss Embassies. After a warm welcome from the German Ambassador, students enthusiastically embarked on various activities organised by all three embassies, allowing them to engage with fellow German speakers from the ACT. The event concluded with a German-style lunch, where students could indulge in plenty of Swiss cheese, Austrian Gugelhupf, and German bread. This experience was not only a fantastic opportunity to enhance their language skills, but it also allowed them to dive into German culture for a couple of hours, deepening their understanding of the rich traditions and the diverse German dialects in the German-speaking countries.
