Telopea Topics No17 2024
REPORT FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Dear parents and carers,
Term 4 has already been extremely busy, and I know that the rest of this term will continue in the same way with concerts, orientations, transitions and graduations. Our Year 6 students are to be congratulated for delivering another exceptional Market Day, by developing, advertising and producing a wide range of stalls for our Kindergarten to Year 5 students to enjoy. Our Week 2 Announcements completed Market Day by drawing the many raffle winners, as well as, awarding the recipients of Term 3 Values Certificates and farewelling Jason.
As we move towards the end of Telopea Park Schools 2024 learning year, there are several important events to mark in your calendar as I am sure that you will want to celebrate the learning that has occurred.
18th – 19th November Kindergarten 2025 Orientation visits
Thursday 5th December Years K-2 Concert 9:40am and Years 3-6 12pm Concert
Monday 9th December Year 6 transition visit to Year 7 Telopea Park School
Tuesday 10th December PBL Values Special Lunch – final for 2024
Wednesday 11th December Year 6 Graduation
Thursday 12th December Primary Awards Ceremony
Friday 13th December K-6 Reports distributed + Year 6 Fun Day
Tuesday 17th December Last day of Term 4
We are in the beginning phase of selecting our Primary student leadership for 2025 which always provides a wonderful opportunity to hear the voice, and learn the skills and expertise, that the students possess as they go through the processes. It has been a pleasure to work with the 2024 Primary student leadership and I look forward to seeing the 2025 student leadership thrive in their roles.
It is timely to consider our SunSmart practices as the daily Ultra Violet levels increase. Students welcomed “Hats On Again” in August by decorating their hats and being encouraged to apply sunscreen before every break during the day. Students should have access to a sunscreen station near their class and reminded to play in the shade if they don’t have a hat at school. I am excited to continue to work in partnership with members of our P&C and our teaching community to build understanding and practices to embed SunSmart awareness for all our students and place them in great stead for their future.
I would like to finish by extending a sincere thank you to our school community who continue to go above and beyond to support the students by the many things that you do including volunteering for reading programs, the fete, our cupcake day, managing our lost property, Wakakirri, accompanying excursions and World Teachers’ Day. I look forward to continuing these partnerships and enjoying the rest of 2024 with you.

PRIMARY NEWS
Year 6 Band to Floriade
On Wednesday 25 September, the Year 6 Band performed on Stage 88 for Floriade visitors. They had a thirty minute slot and played 10 songs to an enthusiastic crowd. One visitor from NSW enjoyed their performance so much, she wrote a glowing review and posted it to Jason Holmes. It was a wonderful experience for our band members. They are coming to the end of their 2-year commitment to the IMP band program and a visit to Floriade was part of their reward for their hard work. We are very proud of their efforts. Well done to the Year 6 Band.

Long live bikes!
This term, students in Year 3 to 6 are enjoying the return of the bikes! With Raphael, our sports teacher, we learn how to become real cyclists! Be careful you must catch objects, avoid obstacles…
What an adventure!

Year 6 Market Day
At the start of Term 4, Year 6 hosted their famous Market Day. The purpose of this special day is to earn money that goes towards the End of Year celebrations for the Year 6s. This is a culmination of units of work around business studies, persuasive writing, finances and budgeting. Thank you to everyone for supporting Year 6 and making it such a successful event.

Reminder
A friendly reminder that dogs, regardless of their size, are not allowed on school premises. This helps maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all students, staff, and visitors. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in adhering to this rule. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please feel free to reach out to the school administration. Thank you for your support.
PBL Farrer BBQ
Primary and Secondary Farrer students celebrated their Term 3 Token win on Wednesday 6
November, with a delicious sausage sizzle sandwich. Both Primary & Secondary Farrer
students were issued the most PBL tokens last term. The event was fun and we noted so
many well mannered students who went out of their way to thank the organisers. A shout out
to all the school leaders who helped, Des Proctor & all The PBL Team! Term 4 winners will
celebrate their win in Week 9. Let’s see whose House it will be!

Dear parents and carers,
Wow, what a year it has been in Secondary Physical Education, Health and sport. The following is a wrap up of our activities in Semester 2.
Physical and Health Education – Mainstream classes
All students have settled well into their new PE & Health classes for the semester. This semester, mainstream classes commenced with their Dance units whilst the weather was cooler. All Year 7 students were actively engaged in their dance classes – and from all reports, really enjoyed being able to partner dance – Barn Dance and Mambo were some of the dances they learnt and enjoyed – as well as the Cha Cha Slide, Boot Scootin’ Boogie, Love a rainy night, High School Hop, Ghostbusters and many more. We were amazed by their commitment, skills and performances in both the movement composition units. Health units for semester two were Relationships and Sexuality (Year 7), Alcohol, Drugs and Smoking (Year 8) and Mental Health and Wellbeing (Years 9 & 10). Our Year 7 students have also really enjoyed learning Pickleball – a fast growing sport that is a combination of Tennis and Paddle tennis that we have recently introduced to our program.
Elective Classes
Fitness for Boys
Fitness for Boys students have been working well on improving their level of general fitness this semester. They have been productively involved in a variety of activities, which have tested their teamwork and resilience, whilst being physically active. Their visits to Club Lime on Wednesday mornings have been valuable and the class is making good progress on their strength and conditioning. Each student has been working on an individual gym program, challenging themselves to reach their SMART goal that they created at the start of the semester. The next few weeks will see the class revisit the Fitness Testing unit, where students will participate in a select group of fitness tests to see what improvements have been made over the last few months.
Fitness for Life
Fitness for Life students are currently in the middle of implementing their own fitness program and working toward their SMART goal. Students are attending the gym once a week and completing a school-based fitness session for one lesson a week. We have been very impressed with many of the programs so far.
Year 10 Outdoor Education
The Year 10 Outdoor Education elective are excitedly preparing for the upcoming Coast Camp based at Lakesea Park, South Durras. So far, the group has completed a unit of work on Initiative and Team Building Games, which required them to design and develop, in small teams, an activity to teach to their peers. As a result, there was some significant ingenuity and creative activities delivered. The end of Term 3 saw the first of many pool snorkelling sessions in preparation for the Australian Underwater Federation Pool Snorkel Award. These sessions were conducted at Civic Pool, whilst waiting for the opening of Manuka Pool. The class has been busily practising their snorkelling skills and working on their water fitness in preparation for our Coast Camp. This practical work has been combined with a classroom lesson each week, with a focus on the theoretical aspects of snorkelling, rips, currents, ocean awareness and basic first aid.
The Coast Camp will primarily include a selection of activities from snorkelling, surfing, swimming, fishing, beach games and night activities, with various locations used dependant on weather and swell conditions. The Coast Camp is being held from Wednesday 13 – Friday 15 November. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to consolidate their learning from their lessons in a supportive and encouraging environment. The attending staff are looking forward to the opportunity to work with the class.
The remaining weeks of Term 4 will involve students completing a reflection of the Coast Camp and a clean-up of the camping equipment. The last two weeks will be spent completing a unit of work on Archery at Montgomery Oval.
Year 9/10 Outdoor Education
The 9/10 Outdoor Education class has had a busy Semester 2, with a new group of students ready to step up to the challenge. The term started with the students completing their theory unit on the environmental impact of outdoor adventure activities and strategies that could be put in place to help preserve the natural environment and promote the concept of ‘Minimal Impact’. They enjoyed their cycling unit, making good use of the loan bikes.
After this the students were split into three teams to start our Initiative/Survivor Games unit where they had to work collaboratively and problem solve their way through a variety of cooperation, athletic and intellectual challenges. Through these activities teams were awarded points that they would need to ‘trade in’ for bonus items on camp.
Camp for the 9/10 Outdoor Education class was rescheduled from Week 2 at Birrigai Outdoor Centre from 20-22nd of November and will start with some ice-breaker challenges and a nature bushwalk where students learn about the local flora and how the area had been used by the Ngunnawal people. Students camp in tents on Day 1, but on Day 2 they work together in their Survivor teams to gather equipment and brush up on the survival skills they need for the second night survival simulation. This involves teams building their own shelters and managing their campsite overnight. It is always a challenge for them, but one they rise to and ultimately enjoy (or appreciate). After a big breakfast cooked by the teachers, the last activity at camp is a High Ropes Element – the Giant Swing, where students are harnessed and raised almost 10m into the air, followed by a ‘relaxing’ swing out over the Birrigai valley.
STRIVE
STRIVE students have had a productive semester thus far. Excursions have had an emphasis in building skills in teamwork and included a laser tag excursion as well as some on-site team building and challenge activities. Students have recently taken time out of their busy schedules to complete their Service Projects. Some projects included bake sales for charity, coaching various teams, environmental clean ups and volunteering at the Red Cross and on a clothes drive, just to name a few.
Women in Sport
Women in Sport students have worked on the development of individual and team skills in both indoor and outdoor activities, with emphasis on game sense, teamwork, and social interaction. This semester the physical focus was on a range of sports and recreational activities including Floorball, Hockey, Badminton, European Handball, Archery, Netball and Basketball. Our health focus was on Community health and the impact of sport and recreational pursuits on the overall health and wellbeing of ourselves and our community. It will culminate with an activity session being coordinated for a few of our primary classes.
Sports Leadership
This term we have started putting our coaching theory into practice. On Friday afternoons we have been coaching our Primary School groups. This has provided the students with a very challenging, but also very rewarding experience. We helped out with a number of track and field carnivals and in theory lessons we are completing an online Inclusive Coaching Course.
Finally, if you have any questions about your child’s participation and progress in PE and Health or Sport, please feel free to contact your child’s PE teacher.
SECONDARY SCHOOL SPORT
As the School Sport ACT program draws to a close, we are well overdue in acknowledging some of our sporting achievements and champions.
Cross Country – We had more than 60 students participate in the Secondary South regional competition, more than twice the number of other southside schools, which clearly worked in our favour as we won the South High School teams score championships. An outstanding effort by all our students in representing our school. From this we had 43 students qualify for the ACT Carnival. Congratulations to all students and well done! We are looking forward to increasing our training opportunities in 2025 to boost our results and qualifiers at all levels, including the possibility of a Telopea team in the Canberra Times Fun Run.
Mountain biking - We sent 3 teams of riders to the ACT mountain biking championships – it was an action-packed day and the riders competing really well. Congratulations to all boys on their grit, determination and team work on the day.
Track and Field - Excitingly, we had a couple of students break ACT records this year – Maimuna Shave (Year 7) broke the 12 years Girls Shot Put and Discus records, and Aisha Shave (Year 9) broke the 15 years Girls 100m, 200m and Long Jump records – well done to the girls – fantastic achievement. We had a number of other children place across the range of events in both Regional and ACT events.
Football (Soccer) - Our Year 9/10 girls made it through to the ACT finals after finishing 2nd in the South regional day.
Netball – Our 7/8 and 9/10 girls participated in the South Region competition – with our 7/8 girls making it through to the ACT finals after finishing 2nd at the South Regional Day. They played their hearts out in every match, closing the score gaps in re-matched games and representing Telopea with great grit and determination.
We also entered a team of 9/10 boys into the ACT Boys netball day. It was a fun day for them – and they’re planning on putting in some training time next year before the day.
Ski trips
This year we stretched our program to include 4 separate year group ski trip days, taking over 300 students to the snow! For the most part, the weather was great, the skiing was great, and the students and staff all had a fantastic day out. Many students had never experienced Snowsports before – and the one-day trips are a great way to give them a taste. All students participated in a morning lesson in their chosen Snowsport (skiing or snowboarding) then spent the remainder of the day cruising the slopes with their buddy and friends.
The 4:30am departure was early, but well worth it … and many of the students were already talking bout “next year”. Thank you needs to be sent out to all the fabulous teachers who came along to help out- without their support the days could not go ahead. For those who missed out, or who might like to come along next year, we will advertise the dates and details in Term 2 …
COMMUNITY NEWS

ACT Instrumental Music Program
ACT Chorale for 2025
The ACT Instrumental Music Program would like to invite interested vocalists (singers) who will be in Years 8-12 in ACT government schools in 2025 to apply for membership in the ACT Chorale (formerly known as Senior Concert Choir).
The ACT IMP ensembles are an excellent opportunity for hard-working, skilled and committed young musicians to work together in an enriching environment. The groups are active performance ensembles, and the families of students auditioning need to be prepared to make a strong commitment to rehearsal and performance attendance for the full year.
No auditions will be held for this ensemble. For reasons related to staffing and capacity of our rehearsal space, places will be limited. Selections will be made with consideration given to achieving a balanced ensemble across all voice types and year levels. Offers of place may also be made based on date of application submission.
Music reading skills are desirable, but are not required.
Applications close Monday 18 November 2024. This is a strict deadline.
Three ways to access the online application form:
- QR code

Please note that submission of an application form does not guarantee an offer of membership.
Please note that students who accept a place in the ACT Chorale for 2025 will also be required to be part of their choir at school in 2025, if the opportunity exists.
There is a membership fee of approximately $150 per year. Rehearsals will be held each Monday 5:30-7:00pm during school terms.
Information cards and posters will be available from the Music/Arts teacher at your child’s school from Term 4 Week 3. Further details are also available on the IMP website.
