Telopea Topics No5 2025
PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
Dear parents/carers
As we come to the end of term 1, I would like to thank our entire community for all your commitment and efforts. There have been so many opportunities this year for students, staff and parents and it has been wonderful to see how well we can work together.
Highlights for me have been:
- Personal Projects roundtables – the year 9 students and parents who helped on these were amazing and their contribution to the learning of our year 10s was excellent.
- Swimming carnivals – our teachers took great care with the students to ensure a fun day for both our primary and secondary students. It was also wonderful to see the student sport leadership students contribute to the running of the primary carnival.
- Camps – our Outdoor Education trip down to the surf was again a rich practical learning opportunity for the students and we heard nothing but good news about them as ambassadors for the school. This was replicated in our year 7 camp in Jindabyne. I know that all who went had an amazing time – even if the temperatures dropped a little.
- The multiple sporting opportunities that our students took.
- The launch of the Francophonie Week at the French Embassy. The staff who participated in this event were warmly welcomed by His Excellency, M. Pierre-André Imbert and the embassy staff.
- Grande Vide and the coffee cart for new Kindergarten parents organised by our P&C
- ABC radio star turn by some of our choir students, singing their Acknowledgement of Country at Manuka Oval.
- Young Ambassadors finals in Kuala Lumpur, where our students came third.
- The Rimbaud Show and La Note de Scott incursions.
- The IDU Business fair.
- Successful days of celebration including – Valentine’s Day and World Water Day determined and organised by our wonderful primary and secondary SRC teams. Their energy and commitment to their community is amazing.
Additionally, our students were engaged in class assessment as well as the external testing of NAPLAN (3. 5, 7, 9) and our EFS Year 9 students have completed their Mock Brevet.
I sometimes find it hard to believe how much our staff and students can do.
New beginnings:
As you will have been notified, I am grateful to be given the opportunity to be principal at Telopea Park School | Lycée Franco-Australien de Canberra. I am committed to supporting the community as we continue our school vision of creating a safe, caring and supportive environment where we challenge students to develop the skills and personal qualities needed to live successfully in this complex world.
We also welcome the following people to the School Board:
- Stephen Bouwhuis – returning parent representative
- Stephaine Ane – new parent representative
- Abigail York and Paloma Garcia-Baquero Moman – student representatives
- Mhairi Henderson and Sarah Moncuquet – staff representatives
I look forward to working with this team on the improvement agenda and MYP evaluation process in 2025.
We also thank the outgoing representatives - Stacey Griffiths and Magali Rozborski - our staff representatives; Lachlan and Adam – our student representatives; Joanna Shapley – parent representative; Cymantha Cantrill – appointed by the Board to support the MYP work (although I hope we can still have this input as we undertake our MYP evaluation year) and Rosaline Rimes-Reich - an appointed member. We thank them so much for their knowledge and care on while representing their groups the board.
Communications
One of the items discussed by our school board has been on strengthening communications between the school and the community. We are undertaking an audit on the multiple types of communication tools we have coming from the school to families and also looking at the effectiveness of communication channels for parents contacting us. A reminder that you can provide feedback to us directly by completing the feedback form. However, in most instances, contact the teachers directly to discuss your ideas and concerns. We will endeavour to respond within three working days but if you haven’t heard, please send us a gentle reminder as we may have missed the first contact.
In term 2, we will be seeking input from parents and carers through forms and in P&C meetings to get your ideas – I was grateful to participate in a conseil de classe yesterday, where I already got some ideas from students and parents.
School reports and Parent Teacher Evening
You will all have received the mid-semester progress reports for your students. This is a shared project with teaching and non-teaching staff collaborating to develop the session’s reporting system, filling the data on individual students and communicating this with parents. We are working with our Education Directorate to use Sentral for our reporting requirements and this semester, the school is operating across two systems, so thank you all for your patience. We also look forward to meeting parents at the upcoming Parent Teacher evenings to discuss the progress and goals for your young people.
As we finish this term, I wish staff, students and parents a safe and enjoyable mid-semester break. We look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday 29 April.
NOTE DU PRINCIPAL
Chers familles,
Cordialement,
La Principale,
Telopea Park School | Lycée Franco-Australien de Canberra
PRIMARY NEWS
As the term draws to a close over the next few weeks, we’d like to express a warm thank you to our parent helpers and school community who go above and beyond for Telopea children. What a privilege it is to have you in the school, offering your kindness and expertise.
As the weather starts to become cooler, please do a quick check of names on jumpers and other clothing. Our lost property selection of clothes is enormous and it is much easier for clothing and other items to be returned if they are named.

World Autism Day was acknowledged on April 2. In our primary school we have lots of children who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. We would like to celebrate them and all that they bring to our inclusive learning community. We just love being an Autism friendly school!

During Francophonie week, all the Year 1 (CP) students worked on Uruguay. Agustina Camilli, who works at the Uruguayan Embassy, came to give us a presentation on her country, which was honoured this year for its links with and its support for the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie. As a class, we then made posters which were displayed at the Alliance Française.

Year one English celebrated all things aquatic with International Water day on the 28th of March.
We read non fiction books about water facts and why water is so important to us.
We also explored some fabulous fishy fiction.
Finally, to bring it all together we explored a range of water themed books and picked our favourite pages to recreate beautifully for our classroom!
1.1 and 1.4 English classes have also been busy creating fractured fairytales with the senior drama class. This new unit has been a lovely collaboration which is fostering connections, boosting creativity and building confidence. Did we mention it's fun! Every class someone asks excitedly 'Are we going to drama today?'
The unit will finish with a performance for all their year one classmates. We will repeat this activity in term 3 for 1.2 and 1.3.

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT
It’s been a busy start to the year and hopefully all students have established positive working relationships with new classmates and their teacher. We encourage students to talk to their families about mathematical concepts and what they are learning at school - we hope some interesting mathematical discussions are occurring at home as a result! All English stream students have recently completed their second summative assessment task of the term. Staff have provided students with feedback on these tasks and have the opportunity to discuss individual student progress with families during the Parent/Teacher information nights – students are encouraged to come along with their families to these interviews.
Throughout the year all Telopea students will have the opportunity to extend their mathematical thinking by participating in mathematical competitions. Students participating in the Australian Mathematics Challenge competition are receiving their competition materials and will be able to work on 6 challenging mathematical problems over the next 3 weeks. This year, over 80 Telopea students are entering this competition which is fantastic – all the best to those participating in the Challenge competition.
Some Year 9 students have been participating in an exciting STEM Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU). In this unit, students have been learning about tensile and compressive forces and worked in small groups to design and create a bridge to span 50cm. They created their designs using digital technology and had to consider the costs involved in their construction. Students have been testing their designs with weights and in the coming weeks they will have finished their product and reflected on their learning experience.
All students are encouraged to come to Mathematics tutoring in PA1 each Monday during Break 1&2…this is from 11am to 12pm. Students should bring along maths problems that they are having difficulty with and some assistance will be provided. Students are also encouraged to borrow a maths textbook to revise problems at home a few times each week and to speak with their teacher if they are having difficulty with these problems.
The Mathematics team hopes all students have enjoyed their first term and we hope all students have a restful break with their families these school holidays – we look forward to working with you next term. 😊
