Telopea Topics No16 2025
PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
Term 4 is upon us. This term includes many celebrations and activities for students and families and so will fly by. I look forward to catching up with parents and students to celebrate these many events. Before then, we will still have our usual P&C meetings, board meetings and assemblies, so there are many opportunities to stay connected.
Our year 5 and 6 students recently participated in their camps at Greenhills and Birrigai respectively. The students were able to participate in challenges and activities that build their connections with each other and staff, as well as challenging their personal perspectives on what they could and could not do. We thank the wonderful staff who went with the students on these camps.
We also ended term 3 with year 6 and year 10 Market Days. These are events that all the students look forward to. It is a wonderful opportunity for the senior students on each campus to run games and activities and serve yummy food. The funds raised go towards the end of year events for our senior students.
Last term as small group of our SRC students from the senior site participated in the SunSafe Student Ambassador Program in Wagga. The program aims to empower students to support sun safety practices in their school and change attitudes towards being sun safe. The students will utilise the skills they have learned to deliver a sun-safe presentation to their peers. This is a reminder that all students should be wearing broad brimmed hats if they want to play in the sun. We have sunscreen available in all classes for student use prior to going outside but if your child has an allergy or a preferred sunscreen, we encourage them to bring their own to build healthy habits. This is an area that we are excited to be continuing our partnership with the P&C to look at the possibility of hosting a Student Ambassador Program here at the school next year.
In term 3, our students participated in the ICAS academic competitions and students were successful in each of the competitions this year - we received distinctions in a number of year groups. Well done to the students who participated and put their efforts into demonstrating their skills and knowledge. Parents should now be able to access all of their results through the ICAS page, please contact telopea.enquiry@ed.act.edu.au if you have had any issues with accessing the results.

NOTE DE LA PRINCIPALE

PRIMARY NEWS
Year 1 English news
1.1 with Year 7 Reading Buddies
Every Thursday in term 3 our year one class have had some big visitors to read with us.
We have also enjoyed practising our reading expression, hunting for sounds in our texts and creating stories together.

It's 1.2 and .13's turn to create some fractured fairytales with Highschool drama.
The kids ( both big and small) are loving the collaborative activity, which promotes listening and responding to peers, active learning and expression.

Two amazing athletes
A little while ago, Aleksander in Year 6 competed in the grand final of the Sydney Winter Water Polo competition. His team went in as the underdogs, but they didn’t let that stop them. Not only did they win the final, but Aleksander scored the winning goal!
We are so proud of his incredible effort, teamwork, and determination. Well done, Aleksander.
We’d also like to give a big shout-out to Tobias, also in Year 6, for his amazing achievements in gymnastics and music!
Toby recently became the ACT Silver Medallist in Level 5 Open Gymnastics! Such an incredible result! He also achieved plenty of personal bests along the way. Well done, Tobias!
He has a busy term ahead, representing our school and the ACT in several events:
- The ACT Gymnastics State Championships
- The ACT Primary Concert Band Day Tour
- The NSW State Club Gymnastics Championships in Sydney
- And the National Clubs Gymnastics Carnival on the Gold Coast!
We’re so proud of your dedication, Tobias, and we’ll be cheering you on every step of the way. Good luck!
Tennis winners
Towards the end of last term, some of our Year 4 students represented Telopea at the Woodbridge Cup Tennis Tournament. It was a fantastic day filled with tennis skills, teamwork, and lots of fun! There were 9 teams competing, including teams from all over Canberra. Telopea proudly entered 3 teams.
Our players showed co-operation, respect, fairness, honesty, and most importantly—kindness. Many teachers and tennis staff commented on how respectful and kind our students were. The results were amazing—one of our teams came 5th, another came 3rd, and… drum roll please… one of our teams came 1st!
This means Team 1 will be competing against other successful Northside schools in the coming weeks. Congratulations to Team 1! - Timothee, Jethro, Annabelle, Delphine, Martin, Felix, Malinche, and Melodie.
We are so proud of our incredible tennis stars!
Bands at Floriade
On Wednesday the 24th of September, the Year 5 and Year 6 bands performed at Floriade. It was a fabulous day filled with music and joy. Thank you to the parents for supporting and coming with us. Congratulations to the Years 5 and 6 students on your dedication and hard work. You are incredible!

LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT

Year 10 Spanish – Exploring Latin America Through Music
This term, our Year 10 Spanish students have been learning about Latin American history and culture through the lens of rock music. By engaging with authentic texts such as song lyrics, video clips, interviews, and historical accounts, they have explored how music can be a tool for social commentary.
A highlight of the unit was the task of writing and producing their own video story in Spanish. This required students to be creative, collaborate effectively, and communicate confidently in another language. They also compared Latin American songs of social change with examples from Australia, encouraging them to think critically about how music across cultures can respond to issues and strengthen their sense of global citizenship.
Students themselves reflected on the impact of this work:
- “Researching the song meant looking carefully at the lyrics. Over time, I noticed the play on words and the hidden messages. This project helped with my pronunciation, taught me some new vocabulary in Spanish, and made me more confident in speaking what I already knew.” — A
- “I learned that when working together you always have to listen to others, share ideas, and make sure the workload and speaking time are balanced. I definitely became more confident in speaking Spanish because I practised my speech many times and focused on getting the words and the accent right.” — A
- “Making this video gave me the chance to really study the lyrics of the song, something I don’t usually do, even in English. I realised how powerful the words were and what the song was trying to say. Working in a group sped up the process as we shared and refined ideas. It improved both my research skills and my confidence in speaking Spanish.” — H
- “Ms Mangini’s personal insights into the state of Latin America at that time helped me to understand how courageous the musicians who spoke out really were.” — C
- “This project helped me to improve my Spanish speaking abilities and my confidence. There were many words I already knew, but practising the script made me more comfortable using them in conversation. Researching also helped me to understand the song’s main message and why it was so significant at the time.” — O
- “Overall, I think this was a significant Spanish learning experience for me that also gave me a lot of global perspective.” — S
- “I quickly realised that the members of this band weren’t so different from myself. They were the same age, they liked punk, but they also had spirit. At their first concert the organisers misprinted their names on purpose (as Los Voladores instead of Los Violadores). To protest, the band drew big red I’s on all the posters. I think if I had been in that situation, I would have done the same — and I love that.” — S
Through these experiences, Year 10s have not only strengthened their reading, listening, speaking, and writing in Spanish, but also developed their research skills, intercultural understanding, and ability to connect language learning with real-world issues.
TAG DER DEUTSCHEN SPRACHE 2025
On the 13th of May 2025 , our Year 10 German students visited the Austrian Embassy to celebrate Tag der deutschen Sprache (Day of the German Language). Together with other German learners from across the ACT, they took part in a variety of engaging activities organised by the German, Austrian, and Swiss embassies. The day concluded with a German-inspired buffet, where students enjoyed Swiss cheese, Austrian Gulasch, and German cake, among other delicious treats.

This experience was not only a fantastic opportunity to enhance their language skills, but it also allowed them to dive into German culture for a couple of hours, deepening their understanding of the rich traditions and the diverse German dialects in the German-speaking countries. It was a wonderful experience, and everyone had a fantastic time celebrating the richness of the German-speaking world.

Term 3 2025 has been full of exciting cultural experiences for our Chinese language students!
Our Year 10 Chinese class were very fortunate to have two cooking sessions in the school kitchen, thanks to the generous support of our Food Technology faculty and teachers. Students had hands-on fun making hand-pulled noodles and dumplings from scratch — an unforgettable (and tasty!) experience

Year 9 students celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival by making traditional mooncakes in class. They learned about the cultural significance of this important festival while enjoying their freshly made treats.

Meanwhile, our Year 7 and 8 students wrapped up Term 3 with a Chinese cultural project on kite making. After designing and crafting their own kites, they took them outside for a joyful kite-flying session — the perfect way to end the term!

Year 10 Chinese and Japanese classes went on a joint excursion to Beijing Garden and Nara Park in Canberra. Students learned about the unique statues and architectural features that reflect the beauty of both Chinese and Japanese design. The Chinese class performed a graceful Taichi Fan routine and the Japanese students showcased a traditional dance performance

It has been a term filled with learning, laughter, and appreciation for cultural understanding!
